What We’ve Accomplished so Far

    Parksville

    Our collaboration and advocacy contributed to Parksville receiving exemption status from the Province’s principal residence requirement under a special resort / holiday destination designation framework.

    Victoria

    BCSTRA advocated for a more balanced approach to principal residence requirements, including provisions allowing limited annual short-term rental use for principal residences. The 160-day framework helped recognize that many owners may need flexibility for seasonal travel, temporary relocation, or supplemental income while still supporting broader housing objectives.

  • Kelowna

    Worked with stakeholders to help shape policy leading to the reinstatement of STR’s in previously legally operating buildings in 2026. These efforts contributed to 2026 changes allowing certain buildings originally developed and operated for legal short-term rental use to once again permit STR operations under updated zoning and regulatory frameworks.

    Oak Bay

    Advocated for a more balanced approach to short-term rentals. Oak Bay’s bylaws effectively prohibited most stays under 30 days. BCSTRA supported proposals moving toward a more practical 60-night per year model. This balances neighbourhood concerns, tourism accommodation needs, and homeowner flexibility.
